Students in Theatre II had the opportunity to work with Theatre teacher Mr Whelan from Valencia High School last week. The class have been working hard to develop their understanding of Shakespearean text in preparation for their work on scenes which will be entered for the DTASC Shakespeare Festival on April 21st at Monroe High School.
The students enjoyed working with Mr Whelan on Iambic Pentameter and sanction, taking part in a professional actors warm up and working hard to identify the rhythm in the words. Our visiting teacher did a wonderful job of guiding the students through a speech from ‘Taming of the Shrew’. The session culminated in a spontaneous performance from Asher Bennett and Bianca Miller, using the skills they’d learnt during the class.
Huge thanks goes out to Mr Whelan for giving up his time to work with us. Both he and myself were very impressed with the students and their approach to the work.
Now it’s on to applying the skills we’ve learnt this quarter, to Shakespearean scenes ready for the competition! If you’d like to a sneak preview of our scenes before the festival you will be able to watch them on the evening of the 18th April in the MPR. Details to follow. Watch this space!
